Tucson AZ P1 Circuit drifting in the Wide Body KA-T S13

Driftaru "nose blunt drift"
For those of you who have had the pleasure of sliding a properly set up drift car in a safe environment you will understand. For those who have never had the opportunity or have simply never given drifting a fare chance, we hope after this quick read you’ll go plant your ass in a “Skid racer” and enjoy some over steer. Ever since drifting blew up in the western world, there have been lovers and haters; the strange thing is you never meet a hater that has actually had the chance to drive/slide in a decently prepared car.  Seems to us that is like a virgin deciding sex just isn't for them before they ever even give it a go… Got to at least try it once right? We all know drifting is not your typical Motorsport and while speed is a big factor it’s not all about finishing first or putting down the fastest time. Drifting is a bit more complex than your run of the mill head-to-head race and there are a few other factors at play. One may even go as far as comparing drifting to freestyle motocross; it’s all about your moves and personal style.
Brewed S13 on a 2000 mile cross country road trip
Recently I had the pleasure of being re-united with my old ka-t S13 that has been parking HARD in Phoenix for the past couple years. To make things even better our good friend, Chase down in Tuscan, AZ had organized a little drift day at the local Go Kart track (P1 circuit).  No competition on this Saturday just a good old fashioned open track to be enjoyed with friends.

KA24 engine build, forged pistons, port and polish head...
Back in 2011 the 240sx was given some attention; the engine, suspension and fuel system all got some love to convert the Nissan from drifter only into a touring machine capable of making the long haul from MT to WA then south down the Cali Coast on HWY 1. This meant the car was set up perfect to make the drive from Phoenix to Tuscan, drift all day long and then drive right back. Truck and trailer need not apply for this one.
P1 circuit Tuscon AZ
The day of the event started off in the early morning when the crew gathered at the home of the “Driftaru” (DJ’s RWD Subaru project) and Bimmer E36 truck (Dustin’s pride and joy). With all the spare wheels and tires loaded up we were off for a long day of ear to ear carefree smiles and tire drops.
Upon arrival to the track Chase quickly split the drivers up into 3 run groups and with the standard 10 min drivers meeting wrapped up cars hit the track. The E36 truck and Brewed S13 were slipped into the 3rd run group which provided plenty of time to adjust the tire pressures, stiffen up the front suspension just a touch and have a good look at the track. By the time our first session began the air was warm, sun was a shining and the BBQ’s were warming up.
Rather than waste anymore time writing nonsense we’ll just show you the media ;)

RWD Subaru drift build aka Driftaru 9 questions with owner/driver DJ

Do you have what takes to Join the Crew?

Here are Brewed Motorsports we don't have customers, we have an extend automotive family AKA a "Crew". We pride ourselves in getting to personally know each and every driver we work with as well as their projects.

DJ aka djelly84 (on the forums) is not your ordinary enthusiast, going above and beyond what most only dream of, DJ simply couldn't be held within the confines for what most would consider a "socially acceptable drift car". Over the past few years the Driftaru has developed into a fully built competion level machine. From the early days of a stock EJ20 tuned on the factory ECU RWD conversion and 3 passengers sliding on West track at Fire Bird International race way to the cover of Super Street.

A brief list of "THE BUILD GOODS"
GTX3076R twin scroll turbo
ID 2000cc injector dynamics
Custom EJ22 JE pistons, Manley rods
AEM Engine Management System

The Wish List
Anti Lag system secondary air injection valve

When did your passion for cars begin?

When I was around 14-15. The first car I fell in love with was the 70's Corvette Stingrays . Looking back I don't know why but I remember I was obsessed with them! First car was a 1993 BMW 325is. Black on black. So rad. Bought myself thanks to a weird turn of events with a senior citizen wrecking the family Mitsubishi wagon. I slept in the bimmer in the garage for basically the first week when I got it.

What is your favorite type of motorsport to participate in?

Drifting

Tell me about your current project or projects?

It is a 2004 Subaru WRX. I bought it pretty stock back in 2008. Working with my good friend Eric Franz-Larson of Brewed Motorsports, I began modifying it shortly after I got it. Initially it was my daily driver and I had plans to make it a fun street car and possibly do some time attack & auto cross events in it. After riding along with Eric in the Brewed 240sx at drift events, I quickly became obsessed with drifting. I thought it would be awesome, and unique, to make the WRX into a drift car and decided to follow that dream. I'm sure others who have got the car bug can relate to my experience. Initially I thought I would be satisfied after doing suspension, turbo and supporting modifications, but it seemed each modification just fueled a fire to go bigger and better. Where I stand now, almost every part on the car has been changed (at least once). It is a fully XDC/FD legal dedicated track car (but still street legal and registered until 2013 wooh!).

What are your end goals for your project cars/builds?

To obtain driving skills worthy of such a car and have the same chassis in ten years :)

What are a few of the major inspirations for your builds?

There are primarily two cars that inspired my build. The first was the Brewed 240sx. That was what initiated the build. Eric was the one that actually recommended a WRX and introduced me to drifting…a deadly combination! The brewed 240 made me realize the most beautiful aspect of a car is under the hood. It also made me realize that creativity, not money, is what determines a great build. The second is my close friend Dustin's BMW E36 truck. This is definitely the most intensive build I've ever witnessed, probably will ever witness, and I was basically second behind the owner in terms of involvement. I guess your environment shapes you, and watching a cheap stock 318is get turned into an insanely elaborate 1 of a kind machine, solely by a self-taught, ex-pro skater/bike mechanic/yoga teacher, using only an angle grinder, MIG, and household tools in his garage, definitely pushed my build to a level I never dreamed of.

Besides cars what do you do for fun?

Snowboarding, skating, fishing. Basically anything outdoors or anything that gets my adrenaline flowing.

Do you have many close friends or family that share your passion for motorsports?

My uncle was a test driver for Ford Australia during the 70's and 80's. My dad loved cars and owned a Toyota dealership. I'm sure this has something to do with my passion. But in terms of friends, I've met so many new friends from motorsports just in the last few years. I feel all I see on Facebook is related to cars it's crazy. My wife is a car model. I just haven't met her yet.

Where would you like to be in the world of internal combustion engines/motorsports in 3 years? Any personal goals set?

In the next 3 years I would like to improve my driving ability and become competitive in grassroots drifting. I would like to be influential in drifting in my lifetime. The sport is young and the possibilities of where it can go are endless.

What is your dream car, project or build?

My car is basically my dream and I want to just focus on getting more seat time. However…I must admit I almost subconsciously still search for a 2-door Subaru Impreza on craigslist on almost a daily basis. Maybe someday…a drift spec GC8 impreza. Or another BMW E36.

BMW E30 SR20DET swap Brewed Thailand Circuit toy

Thailand is home to a very unique “tuner” scene, with an endless supply of JDM engines and parts available every swap you can imagine happens  in this great land. 2jz powered big body VIP Benz and Bimmers, 1uz American muscle cars, SR20det Miata’s to name just a few.

Models, cars Thailand Flush Style

A dream land with secret hidden circuits tucked away in the mountains that can be privately rented out for the for less than $100 usd per day. This is a great place to be if you have a car and want to get some cheap seat time.

I quickly realized that if I am going to be living here for more than 6 months dealing with parts, builds, engines and tuning projects for customers I’m going to have to build my own car, there is simply no way around it! I rather quickly found myself scouting for a clean BMW E30 chassis, something simple, light weight, RWD and a bit classy. With such a small car the SR20DET was the obvious engine choice, readily available and easily able to put out 400-500 whp which will be more than enough for this 2200 lb go cart.

The build is only now in its infancy, much more to come…

Just cleaning up the interior and some chassis wiring.

Still running E30 flca for now, E46 control arms cleared customs 4/20/12 after a long Thai new year celebration. E36 non M steering rack E36 tie rods inner/outer.
OEM Nissan GT-R IC
Sparco Prodrive seat (old school used WRC seat from Japan)

Deep dish steering wheel and BC Sports Coilovers

Parts from America are also on the way, hopefully they make it through customs MUCH faster than the control arms.
Speed density conversion
Anti lag hardware
Bushings
Medium case e30 output shafts (currently have small diff)
Injector Dynamics 1000cc injectors Injector Dynamics Sale
Bosch 044 fuel pump AEM intank e85 340lph pump
Copper core NGK BKR7e’s
AEM smart coil (anti lag)

ID 1000cc injectors and AEM smart coil modeling before they find their new home on the SR

This will be a  basic 400 torque 400 whp set up all said and done, in a 2200 lb car it’s gonna be a good time. I will be using E85 as it  is some what common over here.  LPG  aka natural gas however is VERY cheap with gas stations everywhere. We will soon be doing some testing on a new High pressure liquid natural gas injection system. Better fuel economy and power output.
Many more updates to come.

Recently cut out the front radiator support, fabrication for some tube chassis influenced mods just around the corner.

Early test fitment, still need to remove a good amount or rear bumper to get things working properly.
