SEMA 2013 - The Engines

One of the highlights of SEMA for us, and I'm sure most all other motorheads, is the simply jaw dropping engines that are on display. From imports, euros, to the ever so clean pro-touring styled domestics there is no shortage of horsepower on display.

First off we have the cleanest engine bay in all of FD, Mr. Wangs 2JZ powered S14.
This LS setup was in a Hyundai Genesis!
Clean supercharged VQ35 in a wildly clean G35 bay

FX Motorsports time attack NSX turbo setup.
Interesting way to mock up headers.
 Twin supercharged madness!
This car was setup with a Liquid Propane Injection system. Made some healthy numbers on the dyno
Race car engines, dry sumped, twin turbo, engineering at its finest.

 Details
 Endless attention to details
Fox body Mustang with a sweet looking ITB setup
Bisimoto Engineering Porsche, this car has to sound mean
There is no shortage of weird random things at SEMA that really make you scratch your head. Rhinestoned out small block Chevy anyone??
One of my favorites of the show. 55 Buick Special, spot the two snails in the back there!
Twin Turbo V6 Genesis, pretty crazy setup
Boosted Honda Odyssey, definitely wouldn't mid rocking this minivan
Awesome setup on this MK1 Golf, boosted with a Garrett turbo.
EG Civic Hatch, with a K series swap rocking a huge Garrett Turbo.
 2000HP!!!
To feed 2000hp you better have a serious fuel system. This car had a full billet gas tank with the option to run 116 octane on the fly to make that 2000whp happen!
New Lexus GS340. That is a brand new Lexus GS with a 3.4L 2JZ swap.
OS Giken, the dream engine right here. S20 with full gear driven timing setup. No belts or chains here. Titanium headers that are purely a work of art, being fed by trio of Mikuni side draft carbs.

2JZs in everything! FRS with a 2J swap, probably a blast to drive
 Because race car
New custom car using a Ford crate engine with a couple turbos making upwards of 700whp.
Well we hope that left you trying to find a way to get more boost! As always we are here to help your power goals become a reality. 9 Questions with Chad Lampano, Customer and Driver

Here are Brewed Motorsports we love to hear from our customers. We pride ourselves in getting to personally know each and every driver as well as their projects.

Chad Lampano AKA (cxlumpy) on the forums is a fellow sliding enthusiast we were lucky enough to meet AND drive with down in Phoenix AZ at the “monthly” Drift and Drag events held at Fire bird international race way. We recently caught up with him to ask a few questions about what keeps him involved in the automotive scene we all love.

When did your passion for cars begin?

I guess my true passion for cars began when I was just a kid. I always played with hot wheels and would look outside the window of my school bus trying to identify cars and what made them so unique. Of course I had my eye set on exotic cars such as; Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Porsche, ect. I got into the building process when I got my first r/c car and realized that I liked to get the car sideways instead of keeping it straight.

What is your favorite type of motorsport to participate in?

Well to be honest the only motorsport I do is drifting so it has to be it. I don’t know how to ride a motorcycle or something cool like that.

Tell me about your current project or projects?

Well my current project, (not yet completely wrapped up) is my 89’ Nissan 240sx. It was the first car that I owned. I drove my car hard for almost 4 years of owning it, taking it to track events in AZ with a rebuilt SOHC KA. It did what I needed the car to do but could of always used more. I set up the suspension on my own it is pretty much fully adjustable arms with the exception of rear traction rods. As of right now I’m going through a build if you would call it that. I cut the stock front tubs out and welded some nice BIG tubs in. Changed suspension parts and shortened/relocated fuse boxes blah blah blah. My engine is going to be a redtop SR20DET with slight internal modifications. The bottom end is going to be basically stock and the head is pretty much Brian crower valvetrain. Turbo set up is a gt2871 .63ar, silkroad manifold and I’m going to make my own exhaust from the downpipe back. As for engine tuning I decided to go with AEM, picked up the AEM EMS V2 from Eric from Brewed Motorsports with all the needed goodies to go along with it.

What are your end goals for your project cars/builds?

My goal for my car is to be somewhat close to 400 WHP and torque. I want to compete but mainly just built to have fun.

What are a few of the major inspirations for your builds?

I think my main inspiration for my build is just seeing what I can do. I can honestly say nothing beats the feeling of seeing/driving what you have built from the ground up.

Besides cars what do you do for fun?

You could say I’m an avid fisherman. When I’m not working on my car you could probably find me at a lake, river, or the ocean. I like to hang out with friends and be outside.

Do you have many close friends or family that share your passion for motorsports?

I have quite a few close friends all over the west coast who I share my passion of drifting with. Mainly they are back in Arizona where I found my true passion for drifting. Recently my brother got interested in drifting but has yet to try it out for his own liking. I have friends back here in Washington who are into drifting but I can say there are a select few who that I can call my close friends. The thing with motorsports/drifting I will always make friends through this sport and will continue to be friends with them regardless if they drop the sport.

What is your dream car, project or build?

To be honest I couldn’t tell you. There are so many cars I would love to get my hands on that I couldn’t just pick one!

Where would you like to be in the world of internal combustion engines/motorsports in 3 years? Any personal goals set?

Well if I don’t join the military I would like to be somewhere on the podium at a grassroots event series or even at formula d. My main goal everyday or at every event is to just have fun and at the end of the day go home safe and find room for improvement.

Get your Drift on

In our last post http://brewed-motorsports.blogspot.com/2011/07/brewed-motorsports-s13-ka-t-drift-car.html we shared all the sexy secrets surrounding the new Borg Warner EFR series turbo charger.  Now it’s simply time for some fun… take a moment to enjoy some sliding. Unfortunately it seems there was a shortage of lights for this Friday night Drift and Drag event creating some very dark spots on the track for our Go Pro.

Some day time shots with sound of the engine and turbo as well.

After dropping the EFR 6258 onto your Full Race manifold (replacing a Garrett GT28) we quickly re mapped the AEM EMS and hit the track. The first impression was we still maintained great response but really picked up a good amount of top end power. Where the GT28 fell off the 6258 EFR just kept pulling. This made for a very linear power band and was great for the street as well as sliding on the track, very predictable with plenty of power on tap any time you touch the throttle. Another thing we noticed (actually spectators noticed) was the sound the EFR made while spooling and under boost, this was certainly not your run of the mill turbo.
As expected we made it through the night at the track without a hitch, just a long night of driving, sliding and hanging out with friends. The EFR turbo also got a lot of attention, being so new, unique and performing so well everyone was interested to learn more, talk about popular by association.
Check out the links below to get a sneak peak at the parts Brewed is currently using on our  S13 track car.

Brewed Motorsports S13 KA-T drift car Borg Warner EFR turbo testing and tuning

The modern turbocharger has come a long way in the last 10 years, with new lighter and stronger materials becoming available the performance and efficiency of turbochargers has vastly increased. Materials such as Titanium used in turbine wheels and forged Billet CC’d Aluminum used in the compressor wheels are now becoming the standard.

At Brewed Motorsports we decided to use our S13 track car to do some testing on one of the hot new Borg Warner EFR turbos, the EFR 6258 to be exact. The new Borg Warner EFR series turbos have taken a large step above and beyond all the competitors.

The EFR turbo charger series utilizes titanium-aluminide turbine wheels. These state of the art turbine wheels are half the weight of the typical inconel turbine wheel found in 99% of all other turbo chargers. The reduction in weight or rotating mass vastly improves low-end response and spool time creating higher boost levels at lower engine speeds greatly reducing lag. The renovation does not stop there, the compressor wheel is forged milled aluminum creating an extremely light and strong CC’d compressor wheel.  Of course Borg Warner’s Extended Tip Technology has also been implemented on the EFR series turbo chargers increasing compressor efficiency even more.  Borg Warner does not stop at the wheels either, the internals have also been redesigned for un matched performance and durability. Dual Row Ceramic Ball bearing w/ M50 races and metal bearing cage can be found at the heart of every EFR turbo. This ensures thousands upon thousands of boosted miles for your project. For those serious racers using anti lag systems these bearings will not fail under the extreme heat and pressure seen in both drag and rally style anti lag systems.

We decided to use our KA24 powered S13 to do some testing on the Borg Warner EFR 6258. Thanks to the custom Full Race turbo manifold we were easily able to switch out the old worn out Garrett GT turbo for the new EFR 6258.  A simple mod to the downpipe to accept the 3” V band found on the EFR and we were ready for some tuning and then headed to the track for real world testing!
Check out short video for the EFR transformation and quick preparation for the track. Of course stay tuned for our full review as well as a new videos from Fire Bird Race way drifting with the new EFR turbo.
